The Maxim gun is a machine gun designed by the American-born British gunsmith Hiram Stevens Maxim in 1883. The Maxim gun was one of the ancestors of automatic weapons; it was widely used in the colonial wars, the Anglo-Boer War of 1899-1902, World War I and World War II, as well as in many small wars and armed conflicts of the 20th century.
