Kubanka Blue Top

Kubanka is a low (shortened) papakha, originally a headdress of Kuban Cossacks, from where it got its name.

In the First World War, kubankas were also distributed in the cavalry of the Kuban and Tersk Cossack troops, Wild Division, and plastun units.

Kubanki were massively distributed since the Civil War in Russia. Cossacks, who joined the Red Army, shortened their papakhas and changed cockades for red ribbons or stars, so that in battle it was possible to distinguish their (Red) from White Cossacks, who also wore kubankas, but with white ribbons or cockades.

Later, shortened papakhas, kubanki, were used not only in the Kuban and Terek cavalry regiments, but also as a winter headdress, and in the Red Army cavalry, in the NKVD and militia.

During the Great Patriotic War many conscripts from the south wore kubanki instead of earflaps. And also officially kubanki were worn by plastuns of the 9th Plastun Division of the Red Army and plastuns of other formations.
